Vortex patterns often appear on the clothes of Saints or significant characters in Vietnamese folk history. They are ancient patterns that represent a yin or yang unit. The symmetrical design of the vortex pattern proportionally demonstrates the yin and yang philosophy of the ancient Vietnamese: The universe is made up of opposing entities: earth and sky, father and mother, male and female, day and night, dark and light ... constantly moving and transforming each other.
